What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a statistical expression that means six times the standard deviation — a measure of the process and product variation or consistency.

A quality goal that means a process produces no more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities of failure.

The culmination of a 100-year evolution of powerful, effective, and practical methods to achieve Six Sigma quality.

A strategy for achieving operational excellence through the constant pursuit of understanding of cause and effect via the analysis and reduction of process variation for those things that are important to internal and external customers.

What’s the difference between Six Sigma and Lean?

Lean and Six Sigma are complementary methodologies with the common goal of operational excellence. Ultimately, Lean and Six Sigma need each other to realize that goal. Six Sigma is analytical and enables improvement by offering strategy and methods to understand the cause and effect of processes. Lean is about the way an organization designs their processes. The central theme of Lean is the reduction of waste. Six Sigma reduces defects and errors by reducing the probability of any failure opportunity to occur while Lean reduces defects and errors by reducing the number of opportunities for failure.

What sets the NWCPE Six Sigma Programs apart from other programs?

Coaching — The Six Sigma instructors are available after and between classes to coach in the application of Six Sigma methodology. Coaching by email, phone, or in-person before or after workshops is complimentary.

Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification Track

Six Sigma Yellow Belts know how to recognize and define customer-focused process and product improvement opportunities. They can participate successfully in process improvement and design projects led by Six Sigma Green and Black Belts.

To certify as Six Sigma Yellow Belts, students take an exam and complete a project to demonstrate the ability to apply the new skills with the successful application of methods from each of the Six Sigma Yellow Belt level modules. By the end, students are highly capable Six Sigma project team participants.

Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Track

Six Sigma Green Belts are adept at the development of intermediate level problem-solving methods and lead teams in projects to design and improve processes. They are prepared to initiate and lead process and design improvement projects, solving for root cause and corrective action. In addition to the Six Sigma Yellow Belt level of skills, Green Belts are familiar with statistical control charts for continuous and attribute variables, and for processes that don’t follow normal distributions. Green Belts are familiar enough with Design of Experiments to successfully participate in the design and analysis of basic experiments.

To certify as Six Sigma Green Belts, students take an exam and successfully complete a process or product design or improvement project approved by the instructor and a company sponsor where applicable. Professionals certified in Six Sigma Green Belt will have advanced skills to perform Six Sigma quality-improvement projects and are qualified for positions that dedicate some of their time to Six Sigma project execution and operate under the guidance of Six Sigma Black Belts.

Earn Six Sigma Green Belt Certification by completing seven courses below and a project to apply Green Belt methodologies, SS499 – SS506. If you already have a Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification, SS499-SS502, you may take courses SS503-SS506 in order to obtain the Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.

Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Track

Six Sigma Black Belts develop and lead teams in improvement projects requiring advanced technical and organizational skills, and coach others in the effective application of Six Sigma methodologies. In addition to the skills required for Six Sigma Green Belt certification, Six Sigma Black Belts achieve a deeper level of understanding of the concepts associated with each of those methods to enable their ability to support and coach others in the practical application of the methods. They are capable of initiating intermediate to advanced level designed experiments, applying the results to optimize process and products, and developing process management guidelines and simulations. They will also be skilled in the analysis of a wide variety of situations involving observational data. Six Sigma Black Belts will be able to form and lead teams with a basic understanding of organization change management.

To certify as a Six Sigma Black Belt, students take an exam and successfully complete a process or product design or improvement project approved by the instructor and a company sponsor where applicable. Professionals certified in Six Sigma Black Belt have advanced skills to lead Six Sigma quality-improvement projects. Six Sigma Black Belt professionals are qualified for positions that dedicate 100% of their time to Six Sigma project execution.
